FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Music at the Mission Presents
Music and the Spoken Word featuring actor David Ogden Stiers
May 22 at Mission San Jose in Fremont
Fremont, April 27, 2010 – Continuing its intimate and thought-provoking chamber series, Music at the Mission presents a program of music with narration. Entitled Music and the Spoken Word, one performance will be given on Saturday, May 22, at 8 p.m. at historic Old Mission San Jose, located at 43300 Mission Blvd. in Fremont. An informative talk at 7:15 p.m. precedes the concert.
From the rantings of a frustrated night-school teacher to the mysteries of Sherlock Holmes and from the tales of Jack London to a new recipe for peacock "Turducken". Music at the Mission explores the many facets of music with narration, from the comedic to the tragic to the absurd. This program brings together veteran actor of the stage and screen David Ogden Stiers with some of the Bay Area’s finest chamber musicians, including Aileen Chanco, piano; Bill Everett, bass; Robin Mayforth, violin; Michael Graham, cello; Loren Mach, percussion; and Michael Corner, clarinet. Featuring music by Jon Deak, Barbara Kolb, Harold Meltzer, and the premiere of a new commissioned piece by Bay Area composer Mark Fish. This concert is made possible by a grant from the San Francisco Friends of Chamber Music, Musical Grant Program, the Fremont Bank Foundation and the Zellerbach Family Foundation. Information on the artists can be found at http://davidogdenstiers.com/, http://www.aileenchanco.com
About Music at the Mission
Founded by Aileen Chanco in 2005, Music at the Mission restores the luster of Mission San Jose’s early 19th century reputation as an active center for musical performance by presenting a vibrant mix of contemporary and historic music in the intimate acoustics of the Mission. Chanco draws on the wealth of accomplished Bay Area’s musical community, inviting the region’s top performers to come together in a celebratory atmosphere of music making and exploration of chamber music in various combinations ranging from duos to small orchestral configurations.
The historic Old Mission San Jose church in Fremont, CA, was a major center of music during the early 19th century. Music at the Mission grew out of the desire of local community members to rebuild the Mission as a cultural center. Founding Director and pianist Aileen Chanco tested audience demand by presenting a concert of both chamber music and solo works in February 2005. All the performing artists and a volunteer staff joined together to donate their time to get the series off the ground.
Inspired by the success of the first concert, Ms. Chanco presented a new chamber music group, the Adorno Ensemble, in the spring of 2005. Ms. Chanco’s artistic vision was to present “a new type of chamber music series for the new century” to stimulate greater interest in classical music among the next generation. The result is programming with engaging concerts built around themes that provoke critical thought and continued exploration from the audience. Informative pre-concert talks and post-concert “Meet and Greet the Artist” receptions provide close contact with the artists, where she hopes the audience will feel actively engaged in the experience as a participant rather than just an observer.
The series has grown to be an important part of the Tri-Cities arts scene and draws audience members Bay Area-wide. Acclaimed artists presented include New-York based, ETHEL string quartet, soprano Lucy Shelton, pianist Stephen Gosling and actor David Ogden Stiers. Alongside the more traditional programs, the series also champions American new music and has programmed contemporary works by composers from Latin America, China, Azerbaijan and the Republic of Georgia and has given premieres of several works by new composers in its short history. www.musicatmsj.org
Tickets for May 22 are priced at $25 and $20 at the door and in advance $28.50 for general admission and $23 for students and seniors. They may be purchased online at http://www.musicatmsj.org or http://www.artsopolis.com/org/detail/977 or by mail at 43575 Mission Blvd, Suite 523, Fremont, CA 94539.

Although this site may still look pretty much the same, I've made a few updates including a new script for the navigation menu, a change of most pages' file extensions, a new search form that uses Google, and I'm now using Blogger to publish news/announcements to the site and registered users can post their comments. So, if you find any missing links or a page that just doesn't quite look like the others, please give me a holler so I can fix it. :-) posted by Clair at 12:00 PM
